The unjust killing of Tyre Nichols at the hands of Memphis police officers has left his brother in great agony and anguish. His fatalistic regret for a catastrophe no family should ever have to undergo is expressed in his hope that those responsible meet similar ends.
“You want my truth? I hope they die,”On Thursday, Jamal Dupree of the Golden State shared his insight with a Sacramento station. His wise words offered an inspiring perspective from California to KTXL listeners.

Due to the unfortunate murder of Nichols, five officers have been charged and are now behind bars on this historic day. Our pursuit of justice has reached a turning point thanks to this courageous move.
“The former officers, Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, Justin Smith, Emmitt Martin and Desmond Mills Jr., have each been charged with second-degree murder, aggravated assault, two charges of aggravated kidnapping, two charges of official misconduct and one charge of official oppression,” according to CNN.
Even after the indictments, Dupree stood by his claim that those accountable for his brother’s passing would not suffer any significant consequences.
“It doesn’t really mean nothing at this time until they’re actually found guilty for the actual charges. There’s a good chance they can walk free from this. My brother’s last words were screaming for my mom, and they didn’t care,” he said.
Evidently, this incidence of police brutality is beyond dispute as both bodycam and surveillance footage show policemen savagely hitting an unarmed Nichols while he is handcuffed with a baton and a fist. It is undeniably horrific evidence that cannot be disregarded.
Watch some of that footage below:
Police pulled over a car on January 7th on suspicion of reckless driving; what transpired next was an incident that led to the unfortunate beating of this person by authorities.
“As officers approached the driver of the vehicle, a confrontation occurred, and the suspect fled the scene on foot. Officers pursued the suspect and again attempted to take the suspect into custody. While attempting to take the suspect into custody, another confrontation occurred; however, the suspect was ultimately apprehended,” police reportedly said at the time.
Violence broke out during the second altercation, and a vicious beating followed.
The police finally acknowledged that there was no proof Nichols posed any risk to other drivers, despite their original assertion that they had evidence of risky driving.
“I’m going to be honest with you about the stop itself. What was said was there was witnessing of what was considered reckless driving. We’ve looked at cameras. We’ve looked at body worn cameras. Even if something occurred prior to this stop, we’ve been unable to substantiate it,” Memphis Police Chief Cerelyn Davis told CNN on Friday.
“We’ve taken a pretty extensive look to determine what that probable cause was and we have not been able to substantiate that. It doesn’t mean that something didn’t happen, but there’s no proof,” she added.
Listen:
Nichols was assaulted by officers on August 7 and then imprisoned as a result. By the 10th, he had passed away from his wounds received in the assault; it was a horrible end for an innocent man.
“UPDATE: Today, the individual involved in the use-of-force incident with officers with the Memphis Police Department on Saturday, Tyre D. Nichols (DOB: 6/5/93) of Memphis, succumbed to his injuries,” the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation announced at the time.
Local protests began almost immediately. Meanwhile, Nichols’ family lawyered up.
“Mr. Nichols’s family retained the prominent civil rights attorney Ben Crump, who has represented the families of several Black victims of police violence, including Michael Brown, Breonna Taylor and George Floyd,” according to The New York Times.
“Mr. Crump called for Memphis police to release body camera footage of the encounter: ‘Nobody should ever die from a simple traffic stop — the footage is the only way to discern the true narrative of why and how that happened to Tyre,’” the Times added.
All five of the involved law enforcement personnel were fired two days following the terrible murder of Nichols. Video footage from the arrest was shared with his family in an effort to bring closure and healing, with the hope that it might lead to understanding and justice.
Nationwide protests and rioting broke out in response to the findings of an autopsy ordered by George Floyd’s family, which revealed that he had died as a result of a lethal beating. All of the video was made public on Friday, and five of the officers involved were charged; regrettably, this did not result in the restoration of Mr. Nichols’ loved ones’ access to justice, but it did result in a significant shift in American society as a result of the passionate activism of those who sought answers and equality.
