What The D.C. Mayor Just Revealed: Only 221 Homeless People?!

The mayor of DC incites a new argument with lawmakers by inflating the city’s homeless population. According to Mayor Muriel Bowser (D), there are barely little more than 200 homeless people in the nation’s capital. Other sources, including her staff, dispute this number and contend that it is far higher.

In his testimony before the House Oversight and Accountability Committee, Mayor Bowser questions the public’s understanding of homelessness in Washington, DC. Rep. William Timons’ assessment that it is “a major, major problem” is disputed by the allegation that there are only 221 people living on the streets of the nation’s capital at the moment.

Timmons questioned that statistic right after, informing the mayor that a city councillor had provided him a report – created by Bowser’s own staff – stating the actual number is closer to 5,000 persons. Timmons urged Bowser to go and see after saying, “There are 221 people living under [Interstate] 395,” in response to Bowser’s insistence that the claim was inaccurate. The mayor, however, remained steadfast in her assertions, stating that she has outreach teams all around the city and that her statistics are true.

There are different reports on the number of homeless people in DC. Despite promises made in a news release by Mayor Bowser’s office that there will be a reduction in homelessness to 4,410 by 2022, The Community Partnership, a non-profit organization, estimates that 4,877 individuals, including families with children, remain homeless in the city.

As seen by the situation in San Francisco, where homeless encampments and drug markets are proliferating, homelessness is a rising problem in cities ruled by Democrats. Nearly 69,000 individuals in New York City are homeless, which is a significant problem. Although there are homeless people in every city, the problem is particularly bad in the blue American metropolis.
