That promise evaporated almost immediately.
Speaking years later on a podcast, McCarthy made it clear she wants nothing to do with the show ever again.
“Over my dead body would I ever step foot in that place,” McCarthy declared.
She explained that she never saw herself as a political commentator and assumed the role would allow her to stay neutral and entertaining. That assumption lasted barely a week.
“Back then, I didn’t consider myself to be a political person, which is why I thought I was perfect for the job,” McCarthy explained.
“After a week, when they said they wanted to get political, I was like, ‘Oh my God, what am I going to do?'”
Thrown Into Political Firestorms Unprepared
Producers quickly pushed McCarthy into discussions far beyond her expertise. She described being blindsided by intense global and policy debates with no preparation.
“They’re like, ‘Today we’re going to be discussing the hostage situation and whether the United States government should pay the ransom or not,'” McCarthy recalled.
“And I was like, ‘What?’ I’m like, ‘I just know who won Dancing with the Stars.“
The pressure took a toll, but what happened backstage was worse.
Sherri Shepherd Confirms the Chaos Behind the Scenes
Shepherd later confirmed McCarthy’s account in full. On her own show, she told viewers that McCarthy was visibly panicked when producers shifted the show’s direction.
“It’s no secret Jenny McCarthy hated being on The View,” Shepherd revealed.
“I remember the day they switched it to politics, Jenny came into my dressing room just like that.”
Shepherd said McCarthy was overwhelmed and unsure how to survive in an environment she never agreed to join.
“She goes, ‘Sherri, oh my God, what am I gonna do?’ And I looked at her, I said, ‘What are you gonna do? What are we gonna do!'”
According to Shepherd, producers even attempted to rebrand McCarthy’s image to fit the political narrative.
“I looked over and said, ‘What the hell are you wearing glasses for?'” Shepherd remembered.
“She was like, ‘Sherri, they want me to look like I know politics.'”
The effort backfired, with Shepherd joking that McCarthy looked more like “a sexy librarian” than a policy expert.
A Brutal Exit and a Shared Bond
Both women were fired at the end of the season, an event McCarthy later described as a “massacre.” The experience forged a lasting bond between the two.
“We could be sisters,” McCarthy told Andy Cohen.
“Sherri and I had each other’s backs. We would cry on each other’s shoulders.”
She described tense moments on air where they physically reassured each other under the table just to get through the broadcasts.
Trump’s Second Term Changed Everything
McCarthy says she is far more politically outspoken today than she was during her time on The View. She credits Donald Trump’s second administration with opening her eyes and pushing her to speak out.
“I’m much more political now in terms of having opinions because of — thank God — our latest administration has helped so much,” McCarthy explained.
She has since thrown her support behind the Make America Healthy Again movement and Robert F. Kennedy Jr., claiming many in Hollywood privately agree but fear retaliation.
“There’s more conservatives than you would know hiding out in Hollywood,” McCarthy said.
Faith, Loss, and a Final Wake-Up Call
McCarthy also shared that the assassination of Charlie Kirk on September 10, 2025 deeply impacted her faith.
“I’ve always been a follower of Christ, but when he passed, I completely surrendered,” McCarthy revealed.
“I am so devoted. I mean, I started Bible study immediately.”
