A mystery that has haunted New Mexico for nearly a year has taken a grim turn.
Authorities have confirmed that the remains of a Los Alamos National Laboratory employee who disappeared without a trace last summer have finally been found deep inside a remote forested area of northern New Mexico.
The discovery ends months of uncertainty for family members and investigators, but it also opens a new chapter filled with unanswered questions.
According to New Mexico State Police, the remains have been positively identified as Melissa Casias, a 54-year-old administrative employee at Los Alamos National Laboratory. Casias vanished on June 26, 2025, after leaving her home under circumstances that investigators described as highly unusual.
Her remains were located in the McGaffey Ridge region of Carson National Forest after a hiker stumbled upon the scene. The location sits several miles from where authorities last tracked her movements.
Investigators revealed that a handgun was discovered near the body. Officials have not yet determined whether the firearm belonged to Casias or played any role in her death. The Office of the Medical Investigator is now tasked with determining both the cause and manner of death, as well as establishing a timeline for when she died.
The case has attracted significant public interest because of Casias’ connection to one of America’s most important national security facilities.
Los Alamos National Laboratory occupies a unique place in American history. Established during the Manhattan Project in World War II, the laboratory remains at the center of the nation’s nuclear weapons research and defense programs.
