Waymo has spent months telling regulators and the public that it was addressing problems involving its driverless vehicles and severe weather.
Then a video from Phoenix offered a startling reminder of just how difficult something as basic as navigating around standing water can be for an autonomous vehicle.
A Waymo robotaxi was recently captured on video creeping forward, backing up and repeatedly changing course on a flooded Phoenix street. According to the man who recorded the footage, the vehicle remained caught in the bizarre cycle for more than 10 minutes.
The incident comes only months after Waymo recalled nearly 3,800 vehicles over a software problem that could cause its autonomous cars to enter flooded roadways.
