Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif., made headlines Wednesday during a tense House Financial Services Committee hearing when she sharply confronted Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. The California Democrat told him to “shut up” amid a heated exchange over rising inflation and the state of the U.S. economy.
Waters criticized the Trump administration for policies she claims have fueled price increases and worsened housing affordability. She pressed Bessent to publicly oppose the former president’s economic agenda.
“Will you be the voice of reason in the administration and urge Trump to stop waging a war on American consumers?” Waters demanded. “Yes or no?”
