Donald Trump’s America First approach is rattling global alliances and sending shockwaves through Europe. For years, European leaders assumed they could manage the former president with polite flattery and slow-footed negotiations. Now, Trump has spoken bluntly, and the continent is panicking.
Trump Doesn’t Hold Back on Europe
In a wide-ranging interview with Politico published Tuesday, Trump described Europe as “a decaying collection of nations led by weak people who don’t know what they’re doing.”¹
“I think they are weak,” Trump said of European leaders. “Europe doesn’t know what to do.”
The timing was no accident. His comments came just days after the Trump administration released a National Security Strategy making it clear that the United States would no longer automatically guarantee European security.
