However, the situation escalated quickly. As Kasparian bent down to clean up after her dog, one of the men approached her from behind and began sexually assaulting her. “He grabbed me by the hips,” she recounted. “He had an erection and just started humping me. I was frozen in fear.”
Kasparian was eventually able to break free, and the attackers walked away, laughing as they left her in shock. But if the physical attack wasn’t horrifying enough, the response she received from her peers afterward made things worse.

Instead of receiving support, Kasparian found herself under attack from those on the political left. She explained how her fellow liberals accused her of being insensitive to the homeless community. “I started getting messages accusing me of ‘painting a picture of the homeless community,'” Kasparian said. “People were saying, ‘These are your unhoused neighbors, and they need help,’ as if my personal safety was secondary to the narrative they wanted to promote.”
What made the backlash even more shocking was that some accused her of racism, despite the fact that she never mentioned the race of her assailants. “A few people accused me of being racist, even though I had never disclosed the race of the individuals who did this to me. And in fact, they were White,” she clarified. The backlash was both disheartening and eye-opening for Kasparian, who had long considered herself aligned with progressive ideals.
Kasparian expressed her disappointment with the reaction from those she had once thought were on her side. “That woke me up. Some of the people that I’ve associated myself with because I thought they were the good people… they definitely have stereotypes in their head and are totally blind to the fact that they have those stereotypes,” she said.
