Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has pushed back hard against recent claims from ABC News and Vice President Kamala Harris regarding his response to Hurricane Milton. As the powerful Category 5 storm approached Florida’s Gulf Coast, DeSantis found himself at the center of a media storm, accused of playing political games during a natural disaster.
The controversy began when ABC News, citing a “source close to the governor,” alleged that DeSantis refused a phone call from Vice President Harris in the lead-up to Hurricane Milton’s landfall. According to the report, some of DeSantis’ staff believed Harris’ outreach was politically motivated, prompting the governor to decline the conversation. The network further implied that DeSantis was avoiding calls from President Joe Biden as well.

Vice President Harris addressed the situation during an interview while boarding a plane on Monday, taking aim at DeSantis. “Moments of crisis, if nothing else, should really be the moment that anyone who calls themselves a leader, says they’re going to put politics aside and put the people first,” Harris said. “People are in desperate need of support right now. And playing political games at this moment in these crisis situations, these are the height of emergency situations, is just utterly irresponsible and it is selfish.”
