During his most recent press conference, the leader of the Conservative Party of Canada intervened to correct a reporter from a liberal mainstream media outlet that attempted to suggest that he was acting recklessly by referencing media reports about terrorism in connection with the recent explosion at the country’s Niagara Falls border checkpoint.
The leader of his party since 2022, Pierre Poilievre PC MP, promptly verified the information provided by a reporter from The Canadian Press who inquired about whether he thought it was “responsible” to label the explosion as an act of terrorism “when no U.S. or Canadian officials or authorities said that was the case.”

“Actually you’re wrong. Are you with CP?” before commenting on how the outlet recently had to make three corrections to a recent report, Poilievre questioned.
“I think that might be unprecedented. I’m thinking about actually checking with the Guinness Book of World Records to see if there’s ever been a news agency that’s had to issue three corrections for patent falsehoods that they admit they made in a single article,” he said.
Poilievre went on to state that the reporter’s question was not true in its premise.
“Where you are wrong is that CTV reported that the government of Canada was presuming that the incident was terrorists. And that’s what I said in my remarks. You’re right,” he said.
“But it’s citing media reporters and not…,” the reporter started, shaking her hands. “You think that’s a responsible thing to go on? Calling something terrorism.”
“No I didn’t, I said there are media reports,” he shot back.
“That’s the distinction we’re making? Okay,” she replied.

“No, there’s no distinction. I said, and I was right, was that there were media reports or a terror related event. By your admission, there were… And that report, according to CTV, came from security officials in the Trudeau government. So do you think CTV was irresponsible?” he asked.
“It’s not for me to comment on,” she stated lamely.
“I just hope you’re not going to print something you’re going to have to apologize for again,” he finished.
While early media reports about the explosion tended to assume that it was a terrorist attack, security footage soon surfaced that showed a fast-moving car hitting a speed bump and taking off into the air. A husband and wife couple who were inside the Bentley, which was worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, perished in the explosion that followed, according to CBS News.
Since then, Governor Kathy Hochul of New York has declared that there is no reason to think that the deadly incident is connected to terrorism on her side of the border.
