The Biden administration is using “wartime emergency powers” to direct $169 million in public monies to 15 locations across the country to accelerate the production of electric heat pumps.
The first projects chosen for funding under President Biden’s authorization to apply the Defense Production Act (DPA) have been revealed by the Department of Energy (DOE). The goal of these projects is to increase domestic production of electric heat pumps and other key clean energy technologies. The Biden administration aims to accelerate the shift away from gas-powered residential furnaces by promoting the adoption of electric heat pumps.
“Covered under President Biden’s Justice40 initiative and funded by the Inflation Reduction Act—the largest climate investment in history—selected projects will help build a clean energy economy, create good-paying manufacturing jobs, improve air quality, help families and businesses save money on their energy bills, and bolster national security by reducing energy resilience on foreign adversaries,” the joint statement read.

Less than two months after enacting new rules, the Department of Energy (DOE) made a daring move on Friday by acting decisively. These regulations, which are in line with the DOE’s commitment to combat climate change and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, specifically target conventional home gas-powered furnaces.
New furnace regulations published by the Department of Energy (DOE) will go into force in 2028. Furnaces are required by these regulations to attain an annual fuel utilization efficiency (AFUE) rating of 95%. This implies that within six years, furnace manufacturers will only be allowed to market products if they can turn at least 95% of fuel into heat. At the moment, residential furnaces have an average AFUE rating of 80%.
Non-condensing gas furnaces, which are less efficient but more economical, would no longer be on the market due to the introduction of stricter AFUE regulations. After the rule is put into effect, consumers who choose to switch from a non-condensing to a condensing furnace will have to pay a hefty installation cost.
