The cries of the “pass PEPFAR now” protesters resounded throughout the room as they fearlessly lined up against the wall. They marched ahead while being restrained and unyielding in their resolve.
The 2003-launched initiative PEPFAR has been instrumental in tackling the global AIDS problem. However, there is currently a contentious dispute regarding its continuation since some Republicans are opposed to giving it a full 5-year term.

GOP Members claim that funding for PEPFAR supports abortion providers, but the Biden administration rejects those allegations.
Rep. Chris Smith (R-N.J.), chairman of the House subcommittee on global health that oversees PEPFAR, is leading the charge to prevent the program’s renewal. He calls for the return of pro-life regulations that the Biden administration repealed in 2021. These limitations would ban organizations receiving financing from PEPFAR from using other funding sources for abortions or from having conversations about them.
Smith told POLITICO that over the August vacation, he worked with Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-Miss.) and other conservatives on Capitol Hill to lobby fellow Republicans in both houses. He claimed that two of their arguments were well received by the members. The first is that even if the program’s governing statute expires, PEPFAR would still be able to receive financing, and the second is that the Biden administration has “hijacked” the program to encourage abortion access abroad.
