The family of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk has taken a major legal step against Utah Valley University, accusing campus officials of failing to adequately protect him during the September 2025 event where he was fatally shot.
The family has filed a notice of claim against Utah Valley University, the State of Utah and individuals involved in campus leadership and security decisions. The filing is a required step before certain lawsuits against government entities can proceed and preserves the family’s right to pursue legal action.
At the center of the filing is an allegation that university officials were warned about potential access to nearby rooftops before Kirk took the stage.
The family argues that the danger should have been particularly obvious following the 2024 assassination attempt against then-President Donald Trump, which also involved a shooter positioned on a rooftop.
