The leaked guidance, first obtained by Live And Let’s Fly and later reported by FOX Business, appeared to direct United reservation agents to help customers who no longer wanted to fly into the airport because of its new name.
According to the memo, employees were instructed to use their discretion to provide alternate travel arrangements without charging additional fees.
The document stated:
“If a customer does not want to fly to the airport, use your empowerment to offer acceptable alternatives such as Fort Lauderdale Airport (FLL) or Miami International Airport (MIA).”
Rather than requiring customers to pay fare differences or change fees, the guidance reportedly encouraged agents to process the requests as even exchanges whenever possible.
The memo also included a customer service script intended to help reservation agents navigate those conversations.
It read:
“I understand that you’d rather not fly to this airport anymore. We can look at nearby airports like Fort Lauderdale or Miami instead. Is that an acceptable alternative?”
The language immediately drew attention online, with critics arguing it appeared to give special treatment to travelers who objected to the airport solely because it now bears President Trump’s name.
After the memo spread publicly, United Airlines issued a statement attempting to clarify its position.
The company maintained that the internal message should not be interpreted as official policy and acknowledged problems with how it had been written.
A United spokesperson told FOX Business:
“the message was poorly worded and not accurate.”
The airline also emphasized that while customers frequently receive assistance with itinerary changes under certain circumstances, an airport’s name is not one of the reasons covered under its policies.
The spokesperson added:
“United customers are able to make changes to a ticket without a fee for many reasons. However, our policy doesn’t allow for changes because of an airport’s name or three letter code.”
That clarification was intended to put the controversy to rest, although questions remain about why the guidance was distributed internally in the first place.
The dispute comes after Florida completed the official renaming of Palm Beach International Airport.
The airport became President Donald J. Trump International Airport on July 9, 2026, following legislation signed into law earlier this year by Governor Ron DeSantis.
Federal approval has already been granted for the transition, and the airport’s familiar PBI designation is scheduled to change to DJT beginning August 18.
Supporters have praised the renaming as a tribute to a president whose Mar-a-Lago residence sits just minutes away from the airport and who has maintained deep ties to Palm Beach for decades.
Opponents, meanwhile, have criticized the decision and argued the airport should have retained its previous name.
The leaked memo has become another flashpoint in the broader debate over how major corporations respond to politically charged issues.
For many conservatives, the controversy reinforces concerns that large companies remain eager to accommodate complaints directed at President Trump while treating other political viewpoints differently.
United insists its official policy has not changed and that customers are not entitled to complimentary itinerary changes simply because they dislike an airport’s name.
Even so, the leaked document has sparked fresh scrutiny over internal corporate decision-making and whether employees were encouraged to make exceptions that company leadership now says were never authorized.
With the airport’s new identity now officially in place and its DJT airport code set to take effect next month, the naming controversy appears unlikely to fade anytime soon. The leaked memo may have been disavowed, but it has already reignited a familiar national debate over politics, corporate culture, and how America’s biggest companies respond when symbolism becomes headline news.
