And there’s going to be, as I understand it, a hard-headed assessment. Is this just the view of Elon Musk, or is it the view of the wider administration and the incoming President Donald Trump?
If it’s the latter, then there may well be some very, very serious questions about the nature of our ongoing security partnership with the United States.”
Security Partnership at Risk
The United States and the UK have long shared one of the closest defense alliances globally, as members of the Five Eyes intelligence-sharing network, alongside Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. British Defense Secretary John Healey emphasized the importance of this relationship, calling it “the closest we’ve got in the world.” However, he raised concerns about the feasibility of maintaining such close cooperation if Trump were to align with Musk’s controversial positions.
Watt added:
“Can you have that level of sharing everything if this sort of stuff is endorsed by the next President of the United States? The question, the answer to that question, does Trump agree with this? Don’t know that one yet.”
Musk’s Campaign Against the UK Government
Musk’s criticism goes beyond rhetoric. On X, he has repeatedly called out the British government over its handling of the grooming gang scandals involving predominantly Pakistani men and their treatment of anti-Islam activist Tommy Robinson. The poll garnered 1.8 million votes, with 58% supporting the idea.
Starmer Fires Back
Prime Minister Starmer addressed Musk’s remarks indirectly during a public event on Monday, condemning those who “spread lies and misinformation.”
“Those that are spreading lies and misinformation as far and wide as possible, they’re not interested in victims,” Starmer said. “They’re interested in themselves.”
Starmer also criticized individuals who, in his words, “debase themselves and their country” for attention, though he avoided naming Musk directly.
