UH-OH! Reparations Just Got SUSPENDED!

Evanston, Illinois—one of the most liberal suburbs of Chicago—made history as the first U.S. city to implement a slavery reparations program. But just a few years in, the plan is already facing financial hurdles, raising questions about its sustainability.

The city set aside $20 million for the initiative, promising to fund it through tax revenue from cannabis sales. But those projections, based on 2019 estimates, are now proving to be overly optimistic. Officials announced a pause in the program after revenue failed to meet expectations.

The program’s first recipients, referred to as “ancestors” by the city, are Black or African American residents who were at least 18 years old between 1919 and 1969. Each eligible participant is supposed to receive $25,000, but that promise is now in jeopardy.
