The inclusion of “ghost guns” in the report—privately made firearms often built using 3D printers—has been a pet obsession of the anti-gun lobby for years. These firearms are largely untraceable, and have increasingly been used to push for sweeping restrictions. Anti-gun lawmakers seized on the tragic murder of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson last December, where a ghost gun was reportedly used, to further fuel their narrative.
But the biggest red flag might be the administration’s aggressive push for so-called “red flag” laws—more formally known as extreme risk protection orders (ERPOs). These measures allow authorities to seize a person’s firearms if someone—a friend, family member, counselor, or even employer—claims they pose a threat to themselves or others.
The catch? These laws often strip individuals of their rights without due process. A local judge or police chief can decide to confiscate your firearms based on hearsay—long before any formal investigation takes place.
While blue states like California and New York have boasted about the supposed effectiveness of red flag laws, gun rights advocates point out the obvious: cities like Chicago and Los Angeles remain plagued by daily gun violence, committed overwhelmingly by criminals who don’t follow gun laws to begin with.
