The Washington Post is being sued for defamation by Trump Media and Technology Group (TMTG), which is demanding $3.78 billion in compensation. This comes after the media outlet was charged with spreading false information on the late president Donald Trump.
The Washington Post’s publication of a misleading and destructive story has put TMTG’s Truth Social platform in danger. By falsely accusing TMTG of securities fraud and other wrongdoings, the piece created a “existential threat” for the platform. In Sarasota County, Florida, TMTG has filed a lawsuit, claiming that the newspaper’s publishing of the article was a “egregious hit piece.”
The Washington Post is accused in a lawsuit of hiding important information throughout its campaign against TMTG. The newspaper did not respond.
False criminal charges brought by Post, according to a lawsuit, hurt TMTG’s reputation and led to public ridicule and a loss of trust.
After The Washington Post won two Pulitzer Prizes in the last year, Trump Media and Technology Group recently filed a lawsuit. In addition, Dominion Voting Systems’ $1.2 billion defamation case against Fox News was resolved for $787.5 million.
The Washington Post and The New York Times were sued by Trump’s 2020 campaign for publishing opinion pieces that erroneously linked the campaign to Russian election interference. The Washington Post case is still pending, notwithstanding the dismissal of the New York Times lawsuit. In 2020, Trump’s campaign also brought a libel claim against CNN, but it was eventually dropped.

One of several legal moves Trump has taken against media organizations is his lawsuit against The Washington Post. He sued CNN in 2022, seeking $475 million in punitive damages. But given his role as a public figure, legal experts warn that Trump has a tough burden of proof in his defamation case.
