Former President Donald Trump was the first Republican to declare his interest in running for president in the GOP’s 2024 primary, and he is still making a lot of effort to distinguish himself from any prospective rivals. Most importantly, he believes that his present position on Social Security and Medicare, which he claims varies significantly from that of Florida Governor DeSantis (R) and other competitors, will help him win the presidency once again.

President Trump has increased the stakes in anticipation of his prospective opponents for Republican candidacy, attempting to separate himself with a major selling point – preservation of Social Security and Medicare. As Governor DeSantis and former Vice President Mike Pence have not yet declared their intentions to run for office, he is using their common opposition to eliminating these “entitlements” as ammunition against them. He emphasizes that only he can secure their retention.
According to PolitiFact, President Trump’s claim that Governor DeSantis wants to slash entitlement programs is only half accurate. The governor did support a bill that would have slowed the rise of Medicare and other entitlement expenditures from 2020 to 2029, but there was absolutely no impact on beneficiaries of Social Security or existing senior benefits.
Donald Trump’s sincerity towards entitlement reforms has been questioned by 1945 and Vanity Fair. In addition to the past president being judged accountable for comparable substantial cutbacks, Sen. John Barrasso (R-WY) claims that they often discussed making them “a second-term project”. This may not have been as distant from President Trump’s objectives as first thought, it seems.
