This plot, thwarted by vigilant law enforcement agencies, could have had significant repercussions had it been carried out.
Merchant is now in federal custody in New York, as stated in a press release from the Department of Justice. According to FBI investigators, the targets of this alarming plot included former President Donald Trump and other current and former U.S. government officials. A U.S. official, briefed on the matter, disclosed this information to CNN, highlighting the seriousness and potential impact of the scheme.

According to court documents, Merchant meticulously orchestrated the plot to assassinate a politician or U.S. government official within the United States. In approximately April 2024, after spending time in Iran, Merchant traveled to the U.S. from Pakistan, aiming to execute his plan. Upon his arrival, he contacted a person he believed could assist him with his nefarious scheme. Unbeknownst to Merchant, this individual reported his intentions to law enforcement and became a confidential source (CS) who played a crucial role in disrupting the plot.
