President Donald Trump announced a sweeping new agreement with Denmark and Greenland on Friday that could dramatically expand America’s military footprint in the Arctic and give Washington long-term security access to one of the most strategically important territories on the planet.
Trump celebrated the agreement as the culmination of his lengthy push to strengthen American influence in Greenland, an issue that repeatedly generated friction between Washington and Copenhagen.
Under the emerging arrangement, the United States would be positioned to expand its military presence in Greenland while preventing hostile powers from establishing bases there. Denmark and Greenland, however, maintain that the agreement does not surrender sovereignty over the territory.
