Trump’s $83 Million: E. Jean Carroll’s Daring Offer to Rachel Maddow!

On the Rachel Maddow Show, E. Jean Carroll talked happily about her recent $83 million triumph over President Trump. In regards to her claims of defamation, the federal court located in New York City found in her favor. This is a result of remarks made by Trump after he was declared the loser in a legal lawsuit involving an odd allegation of sexual assault in a department shop in New York City in the 1990s. Carroll’s claim was vigorously refuted by Trump, but the court granted her the significant judgment.

Carroll appeared on Monday morning television shows to celebrate her recent victory. (See Cristina Laila’s TGP report here.)

The 80-year-old Carroll made an appearance alongside her beaming lawyers, Shawn Crowley and Roberta “Robbie” Kaplan, and gushed to Maddow about wanting to take her shopping with Trump’s money. “First thing, Rachel, you and I are going to go shopping, we’re going to get completely new wardrobes, new shoes…Rachel, what do you want, penthouse? It’s yours, Rachel! Penthouse? And France? You want France? You want to go fishing in France?”

Then Crowley interrupted, “That’s a joke.”

Carroll said that she had a “breakdown” and was scared before to the trial, saying, “I couldn’t talk and I couldn’t go on.” She told Maddow that if her legal advisers recommended it, she would think about suing Trump once more.

An analysis of Carroll’s prize (from a clip on NBC News):

Former President Donald Trump was ordered by a jury on Friday to pay more than $83 million in damages for his continuous defamation of writer E. Jean Carroll.

The nine-member federal court jury in New York debated for less than three hours before returning a verdict.

Carroll received an award of $11 million for reputational harm, $7.3 million for mental distress and other damages, and $65 million in punitive damages.

..Carroll has now lost two trials against Trump. A separate jury last year found Trump guilty of defaming her by making fun of her accusations after he left the White House and of sexually assaulting her in a department shop in New York City in the 1990s. Trump is challenging the $5 million damages award they gave her.

Based on the jury’s verdict, U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan—who is unrelated to Carroll’s lawyer—found Trump guilty for defamation in the present case. Despite being prohibited by the ruling from testifying that Carroll’s assertion was untrue, Trump still succeeded in doing so throughout his brief testimony. He declared, “I consider it a false accusation.”

The Maddow Blog said, “Apparently, imagining how to spend Donald Trump’s money is as fun as you might have guessed.”

Taken from the YouTube transcript, with some formatting adjustments made:

Maddow: YOU’VE TALKED ABOUT USING SOME OF TRUMP’S MONEY THAT YOU’RE ABOUT TO GET TO HELPIN6 SHORE UP WOMEN’S RIGHTS. DO YOU KNOW WHAT THAT MIGHT BE, WHAT THAT MIGHT LOOK LIKE?

Carroll: YES, RACHEL, YES!

Maddow: TELL ME.

Carroll: I HAVE SUCH, SUCH GREAT IDEAS FOR ALL THE GOOD I’M GOING TO DO WITH THIS MONEY. FIRST THING, RACHEL, YOU AND I ARE GOING TO GO SHOPPING. WE’RE GOING GET COMPLETELY NEW WARDROBES, NEW SHOES, MOTORCYCLE FOR CROWLEY, NEW FISHING ROD FOR ROBBIE. RACHEL, WHAT DO YOU WANT? PENTHOUSE? IT’S YOURSELF. RACHEL.

Maddow: NOTHING.

Carroll: PENTHOUSE IN FRANCE? YOU WANT FRANCE? YOU WANT TO GO FISHING IN FRANCE?

Maddow: NO.

Carroll: NO? ALL RIGHT, ALL RIGHT.

Lawyer Shawn Crowley: THAT’S A JOKE.

Maddow: ALTHOUGH, IF ME FISHING IN FRANCE COULD DO SOMETHING FOR WOMEN’S RIGHTS, I WOULD TAKE THE HIT, I WOULD OBVIOUSLY TAKE ONE FOR THE TEAM.

MSNBC has uploaded videos of the whole Maddow interview to YouTube.
