For millions of Americans, the memory of the 1973 oil embargo still stings. When Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) slammed the brakes on oil exports, families sat in mile-long gas lines, rationed fuel, and watched prices skyrocket overnight.
Now, President Donald Trump is warning the nation that history could repeat itself — but this time, it won’t be gasoline that disappears.
It will be the critical minerals that power your iPhone, electric vehicles, missile systems, and the F-35 Lightning II.
And according to Trump, America is dangerously close to that tipping point.
A Crisis Waiting To Happen
Last month, Trump unveiled Project Vault, a sweeping $12 billion initiative designed to secure America’s access to rare earth elements and other critical minerals. The goal? Break China’s stranglehold over the materials that keep the U.S. economy and military running.
The numbers are staggering.
China currently controls roughly 70% of global rare earth mining and a jaw-dropping 90% of the processing capacity. That dominance didn’t materialize by chance.
