President Trump, speaking directly with service members on Thanksgiving, delivered the crushing update to the nation. “Right now, I heard that Sarah Beckstrom of West Virginia, one of the guardsmen that we’re talking about, highly respected, young, magnificent person, started service in June of 2023, outstanding in every way. She’s just passed away,” he said.
The president went on, visibly emotional. “She’s no longer with us. She’s looking down at us right now. Her parents are with her. This just happened,” he added, describing Beckstrom as an “incredible person” who was “outstanding in every single way in every department.”
Beckstrom volunteered for the shift so her fellow soldiers could spend Thanksgiving with their families. Her dedication has now become a sobering symbol of service and sacrifice.
On Friday morning, the Justice Department made clear that the case has moved into a new phase. U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro confirmed on Fox News that Lakanwal will face upgraded charges that carry the possibility of capital punishment.
“Rahmanullah Lakanwal will now be charged with murder in the first degree. There are certainly many more charges to come, but we are upgrading the initial charges from assault to murder one,” Pirro announced.
From the federal prosecutors’ perspective, this case represents more than one act of violence. It is a test of whether the capital can reclaim law and order after months of rising frustration with criminal leniency, progressive policies, and a shocking influx of foreign nationals released into communities with little oversight.
Pirro emphasized the results already achieved since Trump’s crackdown began earlier this year. “Let me be clear: This isn’t just about one case. We’ve seen a 20 percent drop in overall violent crime in the district since May, thanks to aggressive charging and no more slaps on the wrist. Fentanyl rings busted, gang leaders indicted, it’s all part of making D.C. safe again. But cases like Lakanwal’s highlight why we need to end sanctuary policies and enforce immigration laws. The American people deserve justice, not excuses.”
Beckstrom’s death ensures the Justice Department will follow through on Bondi’s earlier vow that prosecutors would seek the harshest punishment possible if either victim did not survive.
Lakanwal’s presence in the United States is also raising deeper questions. He entered the country under humanitarian parole in 2021 — one of thousands ushered in during the Biden administration’s chaotic Afghanistan withdrawal. That program has been widely criticized for poor vetting and a politically motivated rush to relocate foreign nationals without adequate screening.
Now one of those individuals stands accused of targeting American troops on American soil.
Federal prosecutors are handling another capital case at the same time, involving a suspect charged with killing two Israeli embassy employees while yelling “Free Palestine” earlier this year — a sign that the DOJ under Trump is ready to reestablish real consequences for violent offenders.
As Americans mourn Beckstrom and pray for her wounded colleague still fighting for his life, one thing is clear: Washington has entered a new era of law-and-order leadership. And the country is watching to see whether justice for the Beckstrom family will be swift and uncompromising.
