President Donald Trump is turning up the heat on Senate Republicans as a key election integrity proposal stalls in Washington, while Republican-led states are charging ahead with their own measures to tighten voting rules before the next major election cycle.
The battle centers around the SAVE Act, legislation backed heavily by Trump and conservatives that would require proof of U.S. citizenship to register to vote. The bill has become one of the biggest flashpoints in the ongoing war over election security, with Trump once again demanding Republicans take aggressive action to break Democrat obstruction in the Senate.
The problem for Trump is the filibuster.
Under current Senate rules, most legislation needs 60 votes to advance, giving Democrats enormous power to block conservative priorities even when Republicans hold the majority. Trump has repeatedly blasted the procedural rule, arguing it cripples the GOP while Democrats would gladly eliminate it the moment it benefits them politically.
During remarks this week, Trump made it clear he is growing increasingly irritated with Republicans unwilling to pull the trigger.
