A Return to the Original Mission
The VA campus where the center will be built has a long history of supporting veterans. According to the LA VA website, the property was first established in 1887 through a grant from former Republican Sen. John Percival Jones, Arcadia Bandini de Baker, and John Wolfskill. Over the decades, however, the site drifted from its original mission, with portions of the land leased to private businesses, including a private school and a university baseball team, often at below-market rates.
“The Department of Veterans Affairs (Department) leased parts of the property to a private school, private companies, and the baseball team of the University of California, Los Angeles, sometimes at significantly below-market prices,” the order reads.
A Call to Support America’s Heroes
Trump’s order highlights the stark reality facing many former service members. “As of 2024, there were approximately 3,000 homeless veterans in Los Angeles, more than in any other city in the country and accounting for about 10 percent of all of America’s homeless veterans. Many of these heroes live in squalor in Los Angeles’s infamous ‘skid row,’” Trump noted in the order.
The initiative aims to house up to 6,000 homeless veterans by 2028, providing services that include medical care, substance abuse treatment, benefits counseling, and job training. The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) is also expected to play a key role in helping veterans secure stable housing.
A Long Overdue Shift in Priorities
Critics of past administrations have long argued that veterans have been neglected in favor of other priorities. The Federation for American Immigration Reform estimated that illegal immigration costs U.S. taxpayers roughly $150 billion annually as of early 2023. Many conservative voices have called for a reevaluation of spending to ensure that those who served the country are not left behind.
“It seems like a no-brainer that America’s veterans should take priority over illegal immigrants,” one supporter commented, reflecting a sentiment widely shared among Trump’s base. “This should not be a partisan issue. Democrats and Republicans alike should applaud and support the president in this effort.”
With this executive order, Trump appears determined to refocus national resources on those who sacrificed for the nation, reaffirming a commitment to the men and women who once stood in harm’s way to defend American freedoms.
