President Donald Trump made it crystal clear this week that the 2026 midterm elections will not look anything like the contests Democrats have grown comfortable with.
Voter identification, he said, is coming. And it is coming whether the U.S. Senate likes it or not.
In a fiery statement posted to his social media platform, Trump promised Americans that voter ID requirements will be in effect for the November 2026 midterms. If Congress refuses to act, he signaled he is prepared to move forward through executive authority or other lawful mechanisms.
“there will be voter I.D. for the midterm elections, whether approved by Congress or not,” Trump declared.
The president’s remarks arrive as the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act, better known as the SAVE America Act, advances through Washington. The Republican-led House has already passed the measure. The bill would require proof of U.S. citizenship during voter registration and mandate photo identification at the ballot box.
