Former President Donald Trump had nothing but praise this week for El Salvador’s crime-fighting president, Nayib Bukele, during a high-profile visit to the United States. Trump lauded the Central American leader’s aggressive crackdown on gangs like MS-13, suggesting America could take notes—and even follow suit.
Bukele’s approach has been unapologetically tough. He’s constructed massive, cutting-edge prison facilities like the infamous CECOT mega-prison, which currently houses thousands of violent criminals, including MS-13 gang members deported from the U.S. And according to Trump, that kind of bold, no-nonsense law enforcement is exactly what America needs.

“We are using [President Bukele’s] system because we’re getting rid of our criminals out of the United States,” Trump said during an interview with Fox News host Rachel Campos-Duffy.
Campos-Duffy pressed further: “Could we use it for our own violent criminals?”
