President Donald Trump’s administration scored a significant legal victory Friday when the Supreme Court temporarily cleared the federal government to continue using an expanded citizenship-verification system involving Social Security data ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
In a 6-3 emergency decision, the justices put a lower court ruling on hold while litigation over the administration’s revamped Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements program — commonly known as SAVE — continues.
The move gives the administration breathing room to use the federal system when responding to requests from state and local election officials seeking to verify whether individuals are U.S. citizens.
