One of President Donald Trump’s most vocal Republican critics may soon be admitting guilt in a major classified documents case that has been hanging over him for months.
According to a new report, former National Security Adviser John Bolton has reached an agreement with federal prosecutors that would allow him to avoid a lengthy courtroom battle by pleading guilty to a single criminal charge related to the handling of sensitive government information.
The development marks a dramatic turn for Bolton, who previously fought the allegations and maintained that the case against him was politically driven.
CNN reported Thursday, citing three individuals familiar with the matter, that Bolton has agreed to plead guilty to one count of unlawfully retaining national defense information. As part of the reported arrangement, he is also expected to pay a financial penalty exceeding $2 million.
