This outcry follows a report from the New York Post which highlights issues surrounding illegal immigrants receiving voter registration forms when they access state services like welfare benefits and driving licenses.
The Post’s investigation points out that, despite the illegality of non-citizen participation in federal elections, there is currently no requirement to confirm citizenship on voter registration applications. This gap in the verification process is particularly significant in cities like Washington D.C., where local laws permit non-citizens to vote in municipal elections, blurring the lines between local and federal voter eligibility.

In response, the House Administration Committee recently passed the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act. This legislation would mandate proof of citizenship for federal election registration, aiming to fortify the electoral process. The sponsor of the SAVE Act, Republican Representative Chip Roy of Texas, criticized the permissive attitude of Democrats towards non-citizen voting in D.C., raising concerns about the potential for these practices to extend into federal elections.
