President Donald Trump delivered a political earthquake in Indiana Tuesday night as a wave of Trump-backed Republican candidates steamrolled establishment incumbents in a series of closely watched State Senate primaries.
The high-stakes contests drew nationwide attention after several longtime Republican lawmakers broke ranks and voted against a proposed mid-decade congressional redistricting effort — a move many conservatives believed would have strengthened GOP control in Washington by potentially adding two more Republican seats in the U.S. House.
Trump made it clear months ago that he was not going to sit on the sidelines.
The president publicly vowed to support challengers against Republicans who opposed the redistricting push, arguing that the proposal was critical to preserving conservative momentum and preventing Democrats from regaining ground in future federal elections.
