As the prospect of a second Donald Trump presidency looms, Democrats are maneuvering behind the scenes to protect their entrenched allies within the federal bureaucracy. A significant portion of this effort is focused on safeguarding the Department of Justice (DOJ) from a potential purge that Trump has hinted at if he reclaims the White House.
The Department of Justice has long been viewed as one of the most politicized agencies in Washington, D.C. During Trump’s first term, career bureaucrats within the DOJ were accused of actively working to undermine his administration. Now, with the possibility of Trump’s return to power, the Biden-Harris administration is taking steps to ensure that a potential future Trump presidency would face significant obstacles in cleaning house at the DOJ.

In a strategic move, hundreds of federal employees, predominantly judges and attorneys, are being installed in key positions within the DOJ. These hires, who would remain in place regardless of who occupies the Oval Office, are being embedded particularly within the Environmental and Natural Resources (ENRD) and Antitrust and Immigration Review divisions. This move is seen as a preemptive strike to secure the continuation of the current administration’s policies even under a potential Trump presidency.
