Special Counsel Jack Smith’s investigation into President Donald Trump appears to have reached far beyond the former president and his closest political allies.
Newly released documents indicate that Smith’s team obtained financial information connected to thousands of ordinary Americans who donated to Trump and conservative political organizations—including people who gave amounts as small as $1.
According to the records, investigators obtained at least 4,782 checks from Americans across the country. The donations reportedly came from all 50 states and covered a period stretching from September 2019 through August 2023.
That sweeping collection of financial information is now drawing intense scrutiny from Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, who has been investigating the FBI’s handling of politically sensitive investigations during the Biden administration.
