Senate Democrats, employing tactics reminiscent of the Brett Kavanaugh hearings, launched a last-minute assault on Hegseth’s character. But this time, their strategy faced immediate backlash.
A Repeat of Kavanaugh-Style Tactics
Democrats on the Senate Armed Services Committee, led by Rhode Island Senator Jack Reed, introduced a surprise affidavit designed to smear Hegseth’s reputation. The affidavit came from Danielle Dietrich, the sister-in-law of Hegseth’s second wife, Samantha Hegseth. Danielle alleged that Samantha had feared for her safety during her marriage to Hegseth and even created an escape plan activated by a safe word. NBC News reported that these allegations included claims of volatile and threatening behavior.

However, cracks in the narrative appeared almost immediately. Samantha Hegseth issued a direct statement refuting the allegations and denying Danielle’s authority to speak on her behalf. “First and foremost, I have not and will not comment on my marriage to Pete Hegseth. I do not have representatives speaking on my behalf, nor have I ever asked anyone to share or speak about the details of my marriage on my behalf,” she stated.
