Top Minnesota Democrat: It’s True

Radinovich, however, argued that Democrats should not automatically accept those denials or dismiss the controversy as a partisan conspiracy.

“Democrats should understand that the allegation is almost certainly true — whatever conclusion they draw from that point could vary — and her denials calling it a right-wing, Islamophobic or racist conspiracy are almost certainly not,” Radinovich posted on X.

His remarks suggest that the controversy could become increasingly uncomfortable for Democrats who have defended Omar without publicly addressing the underlying questions.

And the former lawmaker did not limit his criticism to the marriage allegations.

He also raised concerns about questions surrounding Omar’s finances, arguing that the explanations offered so far have failed to adequately address the issues being raised.

“And then I’d be very, very careful about how I qualified on allegations around her finances — where her defense looks similar and where no meaningful questions have been answered publicly, and where any objective look at the evidence doesn’t look… great,” he posted on X.

The comments add another dimension to the controversy because the criticism is coming from within Minnesota’s Democratic political circles rather than exclusively from Republican opponents.

Radinovich Challenges Democrats Over Federal Investigation

Radinovich’s criticism extended to the federal investigation itself, particularly after reports emerged that federal agents had searched Omar’s Washington, D.C., residence.

When an Omar supporter challenged his position, Radinovich made clear that he was not simply accepting every action taken by the Trump administration. He expressed reservations about the Justice Department’s credibility and the timing of the search, but argued that the existence of a judicially approved warrant was significant.

In a separate exchange, he wrote:

“it’s notable a DC judge signed off on it.”

He then reiterated his position on the marriage controversy:

“I’m pretty confident this specific allegation is true.”

Radinovich also pushed back against suggestions that his assessment was based on political hostility toward Omar. He argued that there was substantial publicly available reporting and documentation that deserved examination rather than automatic dismissal.

“There’s plenty of evidence and sourcing available if you don’t dismiss it out of hand,” he posted while defending himself from an Omar supporter.

He subsequently outlined several issues he believes warrant further scrutiny, including the timeline of the marriage, tax documents, deleted social media material, withdrawn paperwork and the circumstances surrounding the couple’s divorce.

“So you believe it’s all a right wing conspiracy despite the timelines, the tax filings, the deleted social media posts, the withdrawn paperwork, the default divorce, the ‘as far as I know’ responses from both parties, and the sourcing of Obama era prosecutors in NYT?” he asked one social media user.

He also suggested that additional information could emerge from people familiar with the circumstances who have not yet agreed to speak publicly.

“That’s not to mention contemporary witnesses who live in our community but who haven’t yet been willing to be involved in the stories,” he posted.

His comments come as renewed attention is being directed toward a federal investigation that reportedly began years before President Donald Trump returned to the White House.

Obama-Era Investigation Adds Another Dimension

One of the most significant developments in the controversy involves reporting from The New York Times concerning an earlier federal investigation into Omar’s marriage.

According to the newspaper’s October 29 report, the FBI and Department of Homeland Security examined the 2009 marriage during the summer of 2016, while Barack Obama was still president.

Officials familiar with the investigation reportedly told the newspaper that investigators uncovered evidence suggesting the marriage could have been fraudulent.

That revelation is important because it places the origins of the inquiry within an administration led by Democrats, rather than making it solely a product of the current Republican administration.

The investigation reportedly focused on whether the marriage was arranged to help Elmi obtain immigration benefits, including a potential path to permanent residency in the United States.

However, the investigation did not result in criminal charges at the time.

According to the Times, prosecutors ultimately concluded that the potential marriage-fraud offense had fallen outside the applicable five-year statute of limitations. Consequently, the case was not pursued further on that basis.

That distinction matters. The reported findings from the earlier investigation do not amount to a criminal conviction, and the allegations surrounding Elmi’s relationship to Omar have not been established in court.

Nevertheless, the existence of the earlier inquiry raises questions about why investigators examined the marriage and what information they uncovered.

Could Investigators Pursue a Broader Case?

The New York Times report also raised the possibility that federal authorities could examine whether the alleged conduct was part of a larger, continuing immigration-fraud conspiracy.

That approach could potentially present a different legal question from prosecuting a single marriage that occurred in 2009.

The newspaper described the possibility as “a broader case that Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin has said could lead to Ms. Omar’s deportation.”

Such a development would carry significant consequences if investigators were able to establish violations of federal immigration law. However, whether prosecutors can build a viable case remains an open question.

The renewed scrutiny also comes after federal agents searched Omar’s Washington residence on October 12. The congresswoman has described the investigation as politically motivated, while her attorneys have challenged the circumstances surrounding the search.

Omar has continued to deny the marriage allegations. During an October 21 interview with MS NOW’s Chris Hayes, she was directly asked whether Elmi was her brother. Her response was:

“Not to my knowledge.”

A spokesperson for Omar has also rejected the accusations, describing them as a politically motivated conspiracy rather than legitimate evidence of wrongdoing. No criminal charges have been announced in connection with the alleged marriage fraud.

A Political Problem Democrats Cannot Simply Ignore

For Democrats, Radinovich’s intervention presents an uncomfortable situation. His criticism demonstrates that skepticism about Omar’s explanations is not confined to Republican politicians or conservative media outlets.

He is effectively asking members of his own political party to distinguish between defending a colleague against politically motivated attacks and demanding credible answers to serious allegations.

That distinction is particularly relevant when questions involve immigration records, financial disclosures and the possibility of federal law violations.

Radinovich has not claimed that every aspect of the investigation is justified. In fact, his reservations about the Justice Department and the timing of the search demonstrate that his criticism of Omar does not necessarily translate into unconditional support for the administration’s actions.

But his central argument remains that Democrats should not dismiss the allegations without examining the available evidence.

The coming months could determine whether federal investigators uncover additional information capable of advancing the case or whether the longstanding controversy remains unresolved.

For now, Omar continues to deny wrongdoing, and the allegations remain unproven. Nevertheless, the renewed federal scrutiny and public criticism from a former Democratic insider have ensured that questions surrounding her 2009 marriage are once again receiving national attention.

And with a former member of Minnesota’s Democratic establishment openly challenging the party’s defense of one of its most prominent progressive lawmakers, Democrats may find it increasingly difficult to avoid addressing the controversy directly.
