A prominent Republican senator is reportedly considering a challenge to Vice President JD Vance for the 2028 GOP presidential nomination. According to a report on Monday, Sen. Ted Cruz has been privately discussing Vance with donors while contemplating a possible White House bid.
Cruz, who last contested Donald Trump in the 2016 Republican primary, has yet to publicly declare any presidential ambitions. But two sources reportedly told The Washington Post that the Texas senator is taking the idea seriously, signaling that the early maneuvering for the 2028 GOP race is already underway.
The senator from Texas appears to be setting the stage for a potential showdown with Vance over the nomination.
Vance, 41, is widely seen as the natural heir to Trump’s MAGA movement, even though Trump has yet to endorse any candidate for the next election.
