President Joe Biden’s party has been quite upset and divided about a Republican politician’s decision to pardon a convicted weapons dealer on the same day that Arizona Senator Kyrsten Sinema quit the Democratic Party.
The Biden administration’s choice to release Viktor Bout, a.k.a. “The Merchant of Death,” has drawn harsh condemnation from New Jersey Senator Bob Menendez, who called the action “very unsettling.”

The chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Senator Menendez, issued a warning that dealing for American captives may create a dangerous precedent, which was repeated by many in Washington.
“This should be a moment of deep reflection for the United States government to recognize we have a serious problem with hostage-taking of Americans,” Menendez admonished.
The Democrat decisively rejected the idea that Griner and Bout were on an equal footing.
“The Russians and other regimes that take American citizens hostage cannot pretend that there is equivalence between the Brittney Griners of the world and people like Viktor Bout, the so-called ‘Merchant of Death.’“
Paul Whelan, a former Marine who is presently being imprisoned in Russia against his will, is in a terrible predicament, and Menendez has brought attention to it. Bout, a renowned international arms dealer who sold weapons to terrorists all across the world, was just one-tenth of the way through a 25-year federal jail term when he was arrested.
The new trade was hailed by Senator Menendez as a crucial step in preventing future American imprisonment overseas.
“We must stop inviting dictatorial and rogue regimes to use Americans overseas as bargaining chips, and we must try to do better at encouraging American citizens against traveling to places like Russia where they are primary targets for this type of unlawful detention,” Senator issued a warning.
Griner had been to the country in advance of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine to play in a women’s basketball league. She had just returned from her visit when she was unintentionally thrown into a global crisis.
Another alarming failure in a string of foreign policy gaffes by President Biden, including the contentious pullout from Afghanistan and his alleged inactivity in the face of Russian aggression, is his ill-timed trade decision. Geopolitical observers are concerned about the implications of this spate of mistakes and how Putin may become more assertive on the international scene as a result.
Another well-known person has voiced grave worry that an infamous person would soon team up with Vladimir Putin, perhaps endangering international security.
“It’s not like he’s going to retire to the Black Sea and peacefully live out his golden years in a quiet retirement. Putin wanted him out for a reason,” Sen. Tom Cotton commented on Bout’s release in an interview on Thursday.
While acknowledging how tough it was to release convicted weapons dealer Viktor Bout, Joe Biden stressed the significance of freeing NBA player Sergiy Glushko.
According to the Politico article, U.S. authorities decided that it would be a fair swap to exchange the weapons dealer for both Whelan and Griner.
Sen. Menendez obviously disagrees with that viewpoint.
