Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer just had a moment she’d probably love to erase — but unfortunately for her, the cameras were rolling.
During a high-stakes meeting at the White House with President Trump last week, Whitmer was caught in what can only be described as one of the most awkward political photo ops of the year. Photos from the Oval Office show Whitmer desperately trying to shield her face from the press using a binder, only to be called out by the president himself in real time.
The meeting was supposed to be about serious issues — tariffs, trade, and revitalizing the American auto industry. But what ended up grabbing headlines was Whitmer’s bizarre behavior during the press availability, which quickly became meme-worthy fodder across social media.

Trump, in a moment that surprised even some of his own supporters, offered praise for the Michigan Democrat. “She’s really done an excellent job,” he said. “Very good person.” That rare olive branch, however, didn’t stop the internet from having a field day with Whitmer’s binder stunt.
“Gretchen Whitmer hiding behind her files in the White House is one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen. This is what my 2 year old does,” wrote Brent Scher of the Daily Wire. Others chimed in, calling her move a “perfect metaphor for the Democratic Party.”
