Since then, Walz has admitted that he needs to be more “careful” with his words. In an interview following the debate, he admitted that even Vice President Kamala Harris had advised him to tone down his rhetoric. “You do need to be collect, careful. You do need to be a little more, uh, thoughtful on it,” Walz said during the debate. However, his critics are not convinced, viewing these comments as another attempt to downplay his ongoing pattern of exaggerations and misstatements.
Walz’s trouble with the truth didn’t start with his debate gaffe. Over the years, the Minnesota governor has made a habit of embellishing or outright fabricating stories from his past. One of the most egregious examples was when Walz falsely claimed to have been in Hong Kong during the Tiananmen Square massacre. In reality, he was nowhere near China at the time of the event.
This incident was brought to light again during a recent interview on Good Morning America with host Michael Strahan, who grilled Walz about his history of false claims. “You said you were in Hong Kong during the Tiananmen Square massacre when you weren’t,” Strahan said. “You kind of chalked it up to bad grammar or getting the dates wrong. But your opponents say you lied to make yourself look better. Do they have a point?”

Walz struggled to provide a coherent response, instead rambling about his time in the National Guard and his experience as a teacher. “Well, look, 35 years ago got the opportunity to be in Hong Kong, be in China, learned a lot about it. Served 24 years in the National Guard. Passionately, in an instance, talking about gun violence in schools,” Walz said. His answer did little to address the core issue, raising more questions about his ability to tell the truth.
To make matters worse for Walz, even his own running mate, Vice President Kamala Harris, appears to be growing frustrated with his repeated blunders. During his interview with Strahan, Walz acknowledged that Harris had advised him to be “a little more careful” with his statements. While Walz downplayed this advice, it’s clear that his misstatements are becoming a liability for the Democratic ticket.

Walz’s attempt to downplay his past exaggerations isn’t sitting well with many voters, either. His repeated misstatements have led some to question whether he can be trusted in a role as significant as the vice presidency. The stakes are high, and with the general election fast approaching, Walz will need to do more than just promise to be “careful” if he hopes to regain the trust of the American public.
The cumulative effect of these controversies has put the Walz-Harris campaign in a precarious position. Walz’s credibility has taken a hit, and his inability to effectively respond to allegations of dishonesty is raising concerns among Democratic strategists. With Republican nominee J.D. Vance gaining momentum, the last thing the Democrats need is for their vice-presidential candidate to become a liability.
In the end, it’s clear that Walz’s habit of making false claims and embellishing stories from his past is catching up with him. Whether he can recover from this string of controversies remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: his credibility is on the line, and voters are paying attention.
