In a move that’s rattling Trump’s allies and enraging grassroots conservatives, Senator Thom Tillis (R-NC) has publicly turned his back on a Trump-backed nominee—throwing cold water on an appointment seen as critical to the former president’s push for accountability over January 6 prosecutions.
Ed Martin, currently serving as acting U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, was set to become a permanent appointee with the backing of Trump loyalists. But Tillis just delivered a likely fatal blow to that nomination, announcing he will not support Martin due to his views surrounding the events of January 6th.

“I met with Mr. Martin. He seems like a good man. Most of my concerns related to January 6th,” Tillis told reporters. “Where we probably have a difference is I think anybody that breaks the perimeter should’ve been imprisoned for some period of time, whether there’s 30 days or three years is debatable, but I have no tolerance for anybody who entered the building on January the 6th.”
The fallout was swift. According to Politico, without Tillis’ support, the nomination is now likely deadlocked in the Senate Judiciary Committee. Majority Whip John Thune acknowledged the setback, noting that Tillis’ defection could sink the nomination entirely.
