In a pre-dawn tradition in Dixville Notch, New Hampshire, voters cast their ballots at midnight, officially kicking off Election Day with a rare tie between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris. Each received three votes, marking a balanced result in this small township, one of the first in the U.S. to release its choice for the presidency.
Since 1960, Dixville Notch has followed this unique tradition, drawing national attention as the first votes are counted and revealed before polls open elsewhere. Located at the northern tip of New Hampshire near the Canadian border, the township’s midnight voting draws reporters who often outnumber the residents. The ritual takes place at the historic but now-closed Balsams Hotel, where residents gather to cast their secret ballots and celebrate civic engagement.

Despite a declining population, Dixville Notch remains dedicated to its midnight voting tradition. Les Otten, a developer working to revive the Balsams, participated in the voting and highlighted the township’s role in promoting civic duty. “If we can help people get out and understand that voting is an important part of their right as an American citizen, that’s perhaps the key to what we’re doing,” Otten said, emphasizing the importance of this symbolic event.
