A four-month nightmare struck veteran Kyle Culotta after he crossed into Massachusetts with legally purchased firearms from Arizona—and found himself behind bars for simply exercising what many believe are his constitutional rights. The decorated Air Force postal specialist, aged 51, arrived in the Bay State with zero criminal history—not even a parking ticket. Yet what followed exposed how far Massachusetts’ gun-control regime now reaches.
Culotta and his fiancée, Sarandë Jackson, were trying to start fresh near her family. The couple, essentially living out of their car and making ends meet via food-delivery gigs, drove across state lines in late June. What they believed to be a harmless road-trip stop in Gardner, Massachusetts changed everything when a traffic stop for expired insurance on Jackson’s vehicle led to a shocking arrest.
During the routine traffic stop, law enforcement discovered three handguns, five rifles and ammunition in the vehicle. All were purchased legally in Arizona—where Culotta resided—and declared immediately to officers. The veteran cooperated fully. Yet none of this mattered once he entered Massachusetts. He was arrested on the spot for possessing firearms without a Massachusetts license and thrown into the Worcester County Jail without bond.
The legal basis? Massachusetts’ sweeping new gun law and a “dangerousness” statute that allows the state to hold individuals without bail for up to 120 days before trial. Under this statute, Culotta was deemed a threat to public safety merely because he owned firearms while traveling through the state. Judges denied three separate bail requests. Meanwhile, according to gun-rights advocates, suspects charged with shooting at other vehicles received bail. One veteran with a spotless record and no violent history was treated worse than a violent offender.
