The Reason Dogs May Be Banned From Class

A debate over animals in public schools has sparked controversy in Portland, Maine, after a senior school administrator argued that district rules should account for Islamic religious beliefs concerning dogs and ritual purity.

Abdullahi Ahmed, the Somali-born assistant superintendent for student, family, and community partnerships at Portland Public Schools, raised concerns about the district’s proposed animal policy during a recent meeting. His remarks have fueled a wider discussion about religious accommodation, public education, and how school districts should balance the needs of different students and staff members.

According to a report published Wednesday by The Maine Wire, the Portland Public Schools Policy Committee met on October 14 to discuss a proposed policy governing animals on school property.

While the proposal may initially appear to be a routine administrative matter, the discussion took a contentious turn when Ahmed urged officials to reconsider how the rules address dogs.
