Tech Bloodbath: Engineers Cut as Writers Score $775K

High schools pushed STEM. Colleges expanded computer science departments. Parents drained savings accounts to send their kids to coding bootcamps that guaranteed six figure salaries.

Now that promise is unraveling.

In a stunning reversal, major tech companies are slashing software engineering jobs while offering eye popping salaries to communications professionals and writers. The very industry that claimed artificial intelligence would wipe out creative work is now paying a premium for people who can think, write, and persuade.

Netflix recently posted a communications role with compensation reaching as high as $775,000. That figure rivals executive pay in many industries and dwarfs what most physicians earn after years of medical school.

And Netflix is not alone.

OpenAI is reportedly advertising communications positions that exceed $400,000. Anthropic tripled its communications team to 80 employees last year and continues hiring, with some roles paying more than $200,000. Meanwhile, the national average salary for a director of communications sits around $106,000. Silicon Valley is now paying four to seven times that amount.
