One confidential source put it bluntly and chillingly:
“The largest funder of Al-Shabaab is the Minnesota taxpayer.”

Let that sink in. Working families paid their taxes, only to unknowingly bankroll one of the world’s most violent terrorist groups.

Walz Oversaw a Welfare System Riddled With Fraud

This wasn’t a sudden collapse. It was a slow-motion disaster unfolding across years. Governor Tim Walz has been sitting atop more than two dozen major welfare fraud scandals since 2019.

His Housing Stabilization Services program is the most glaring example. Launched in 2020 with an estimated annual cost of $2.6 million, it exploded to $104 million by 2024 — and burned through $61 million in just the first seven months of 2025.

Acting U.S. Attorney Joe Thompson described what investigators found, and didn’t sugarcoat it:

“The vast majority” of the program was fraudulent.

He added:
“Most of these cases, unlike a lot of Medicare fraud and Medicaid fraud cases nationally, aren’t just overbilling. These are often just purely fictitious companies solely created to defraud the system.”

This was not sloppy oversight. It was an open door for criminals.

Feeding Our Future: The Pandemic Scam That Shook the Nation

Minnesota already made national headlines when the Feeding Our Future scandal revealed $250 million in stolen federal food-program money. The majority of the defendants were Somali immigrants tied to fake nonprofits claiming to feed nonexistent children.

Fifty-six people have pleaded guilty so far. The stolen cash purchased luxury cars, foreign real estate in Kenya and Turkey, and lavish lifestyles — while Minnesota children went hungry.

And that was just one branch of a much larger problem.

Autism Treatment Fraud: A Billion-Dollar Black Hole

While Feeding Our Future unraveled, another astonishing scam was growing even faster. Medicaid claims for autism services skyrocketed from $3 million in 2018 to $399 million by 2023. The number of autism “providers” exploded from 41 to 328.

Federal agents discovered that many of these operations were built on fabricated autism diagnoses. Parents were reportedly paid $300 to $1,500 per month in kickbacks for participating.

One center billed more than $850,000 for treatments tied to a single client.

This wasn’t healthcare. It was industrial-scale theft.

The Money Trail Leads Directly Overseas

Glenn Kerns, a retired detective and longtime counterterrorism investigator, followed the financial trail. He discovered one hawala network moved an astonishing $20 million overseas in one year.

“The amount of money was staggering,” he said.

Kerns also uncovered something even more alarming: many of the individuals sending money abroad were themselves receiving government benefits.

Another former terrorist task force official confirmed the pipeline:

“Every scrap of economic activity, in the Twin Cities, in America, throughout Western Europe, anywhere Somalis are concentrated, every cent that is sent back to Somalia benefits Al-Shabaab in some way.”

A third source, who helped investigate ISIS recruitment in Minnesota, echoed the warning:

“This is a third-rail conversation, but the largest funder of Al-Shabaab is the Minnesota taxpayer.”

Democrats Looked Away to Protect Their Political Base

So how did this go on so long?

Simple. Politics.

Former state senator David Gaither explained:
“The media does not want to put a light on this. And if you’re a politician, it’s a significant disadvantage for you to alienate the Somali community. If you don’t win the Somali community, you can’t win Minneapolis. And if you don’t win Minneapolis, you can’t win the state.”

Governor Walz didn’t act until prosecutors forced his hand. He shut down the fraudulent program only after indictments began dropping. He waited until 2025 to create a fraud unit — six years after the theft began.

Several participants in the Feeding Our Future operation had ties to prominent Democrats, including Congresswoman Ilhan Omar and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey’s administration.

Meanwhile, federal officials reported that Somali remittances totaled $1.7 billion in 2023 — more than the Somali government’s entire budget.

Minnesota Taxpayers Funded Terrorists — and Walz Wants Another Term

Republican challenger Kristin Robbins slammed Walz for his failures:
“I’m glad to see Governor Walz is finally taking action to audit these programs after years of ignoring credible allegations of fraud.”

Representative Pete Stauber was even more direct:
“As Tim Walz helped create this system and shrugs his shoulders every day when yet another fraud story is revealed, Minnesotans’ hard-earned tax money is funding terrorists.”

The evidence is clear. Minnesota’s welfare system became a financial artery for criminal networks, radical organizations, and foreign terror groups — all while Democrats in power looked the other way.

And now Walz believes he deserves four more years.
