Talarico’s Dad Exposed — And He Called Him His Hero

The resurfaced material raises questions about the contrast between the candidate’s public emphasis on Christian faith and the tone of the remarks attributed to someone he has held up as a model of character.

Posts Mocking Christianity Draw Renewed Attention

One of the most controversial exchanges reportedly occurred in September 2023, when an X user made a vulgar comment about the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.

The user wrote: “Christ had died via a pole up the a** I wonder if he’d have been as revered.”

The account attributed to Mark Talarico responded with a joke referencing a popular jewelry brand.

“definitely make for some interesting James Avery jewelry.”

The exchange has drawn scrutiny because it involved one of Christianity’s most sacred events. James Avery is known for jewelry that includes Christian-themed designs, making the response an apparent attempt to turn the religious imagery into a punchline.

Another post from February 2023 involved an Ash Wednesday image shared by Fox News. The image showed two people with ash crosses on their foreheads, reflecting a longstanding Christian tradition observed at the beginning of Lent.

Rather than engaging with the religious significance of the observance, the account reportedly responded with a video showing a man with the word “twat” written across his forehead.

The post added to the growing collection of material attracting attention online, particularly given James Talarico’s own frequent references to Christianity in his political messaging.

Another Exchange Targets a Woman’s Christian Testimony

The resurfaced posts also include a response to a woman discussing how her Christian faith helped her move beyond childhood trauma and leave a same-sex relationship.

In an August 2024 video, the woman described her experience in personal terms.

“He grabbed my heart and I knew that his love could set me free and that’s exactly what happened,” the woman said.

The account attributed to Mark responded with criticism of her religious beliefs, according to the reporting cited in the original account of the controversy.

The exchange has attracted attention because the woman was discussing a deeply personal experience involving faith and recovery. Instead of treating the testimony as a sincere account of her beliefs, the response reportedly took aim at the religious perspective she described.

The episode also highlights the broader dispute surrounding religion in American politics, where expressions of Christian conviction can become flashpoints in an increasingly polarized public debate.

Conservative Women Also Targeted

The controversy extends beyond religious commentary. Several posts attributed to Mark Talarico reportedly mocked women associated with conservative politics.

In January 2024, the account responded to a photograph featuring former Arizona gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake and three other women.

The group “is like the afternoon shift at a strip club.”

The remark used a disparaging comparison to ridicule the women pictured. Lake has been a prominent figure in Republican politics and a frequent target of criticism from political opponents.

Another post reportedly compared Kimberly Guilfoyle, the former U.S. ambassador to Greece, to Ursula, the villain from Disney’s animated film The Little Mermaid.

The posts have attracted attention because they target recognizable conservative figures in terms that critics may view as personal insults rather than substantive political commentary.

The remarks also stand in contrast to the language of respect and personal responsibility that James Talarico has used when discussing his upbringing and the lessons he learned from his father.

Talarico Has Publicly Praised His Adoptive Father

James Talarico has not portrayed Mark as a distant figure in his life. Instead, the Texas Democrat has repeatedly credited his adoptive father with helping shape his character and teaching him the importance of treating others well.

In February 2020, after another social media user praised Talarico’s work in the Texas Legislature, the candidate responded warmly to his father.

“You taught me well, Pops!” Talarico wrote.

In 2022, he also corrected a social media user who mistakenly identified Mark as his biological father. In doing so, he offered an emphatic description of their relationship, calling his adoptive father the “greatest man I’ve ever known.”

Those comments have taken on renewed significance as the older posts circulate, given the contrast between the candidate’s praise and the language appearing in the account attributed to Mark.

The issue received another layer of attention following a March 14 campaign event in Austin, where Talarico spoke about fatherhood and the lessons he learned growing up.

“Anyone can be a father, but it takes someone special to be a dad,” Talarico said.

He recalled watching his father mow the lawn of an elderly neighbor every Saturday, describing the routine as an example of the responsibility and consideration he believes men should demonstrate.

“It’s taking care of the people around you,” Talarico said. “It’s doing what’s right even when no one is watching. The internet tells these young men that being a man means tearing other people down. It means trolling and owning and dominating. So that’s not what my dad taught me.”

The comments have drawn renewed attention alongside the resurfaced posts because they explicitly reject the sort of behavior Talarico described as destructive.

Political Implications for the Texas Senate Race

For Talarico, the controversy arrives at a time when his public identity as a Christian seminarian is an important component of his political appeal. The Democrat frequently discusses his faith and has spoken publicly about his aspirations to become a preacher.

His religious background distinguishes him from some other Democratic politicians and provides a central theme in how he presents himself to voters.

That makes the resurfaced material particularly sensitive. Voters may reasonably examine whether a candidate’s public statements align with the values he promotes, even when the disputed comments were made by someone else.

At the same time, an important distinction remains: the posts at issue are attributed to Mark Talarico, not James Talarico. The available account of the controversy does not establish that the candidate authored, endorsed, or directed the remarks.

Nor does a family relationship automatically make one person responsible for another adult’s online conduct.

Nevertheless, the episode creates an awkward political contrast for a candidate who has repeatedly credited his adoptive father with teaching him kindness, integrity, and respect for others.

The resurfaced posts are likely to keep that contrast in the spotlight as scrutiny of the Texas Senate race continues. Whether the controversy has a meaningful impact on voters remains to be seen, but it has placed renewed attention on the relationship between Talarico’s public message and the online conduct attributed to a member of his family.
