Authorities Say Suspect Shared Racist Manifesto, Discussed Killing Indian Americans, and Possessed Rifle and Hundreds of Rounds of Ammunition
A disturbing alleged mass shooting plot in suburban Chicago was interrupted after a concerned coworker alerted authorities to threatening messages from a 19-year-old Illinois man accused of planning an attack on a Hindu place of worship.
Alexandros Paporakis, of Palatine, Illinois, was arrested on October 11 after investigators received information about electronic communications that reportedly described plans for mass violence. Prosecutors allege that Paporakis had been preparing for an attack for an extended period and had focused on a Hindu temple in the Aurora area in the weeks leading up to the incident.
The case has drawn attention to the role ordinary citizens can play in preventing potential acts of violence, particularly when troubling statements are accompanied by evidence suggesting that someone may be preparing to act on them.
