A Swiss Muslim politician from the Green Party, Sanija Ameti, has ignited a fierce controversy after posting photos on Instagram of herself shooting at an image of Mary and Baby Jesus. Ameti, who was once a leading figure in Swiss politics and co-chair of the liberal movement Operation Libero, faced backlash from both conservative and religious communities, ultimately leading her to step down from her position within the party. The Instagram post has sparked not only public outrage but also legal action against Ameti.
The now-deleted post featured two photos, the first of which depicted Ameti holding a firearm, accompanied by the caption “Abschalten,” a German word meaning “turn off” or “detach.” However, it was the second photo that set off a firestorm of criticism. In it, the target of her gunshots was revealed to be a sacred image of the Madonna and Child, a highly revered symbol in Christianity. This image was reportedly part of an art catalogue, but its religious significance did not go unnoticed by the public.

Following the uproar, Ameti made her Instagram account private and promptly removed the controversial post. She also issued a public apology, acknowledging her lack of foresight in posting the images. “What I did was absolutely stupid,” she admitted. She went on to explain that the choice of the image was not intended to provoke or offend, stating, “I needed a visible image for the 10-meter shot. I did not pay attention to the content of the images. This was a mistake, and I am deeply sorry if anyone was offended.”
