Supreme Court’s Redistricting Ruling Lands Hard

The U.S. Supreme Court just handed Democrats a major defeat in the escalating national war over congressional redistricting, refusing to rescue a Virginia map that could have dramatically boosted the Left’s chances of reclaiming the House this November.

In a brief order issued Friday, the nation’s highest court rejected an emergency appeal from Virginia Democrats who were desperately trying to revive a controversial congressional map that critics argued was designed to tilt the state heavily in favor of Democrats. The justices provided no explanation for the decision and noted no public dissents, effectively shutting the door on one of the Democratic Party’s biggest remaining redistricting gambles before the midterms.

The ruling leaves Virginia’s current congressional boundaries intact and delivers another political win to Republicans, who have been aggressively fighting to preserve their razor-thin House majority heading into November.

The legal battle erupted after Virginia’s Supreme Court struck down the proposed Democratic-backed map in a narrow 4-3 ruling. The state court concluded lawmakers failed to follow Virginia’s constitutional requirements while attempting to push through the unusual mid-decade redistricting effort.
